Hot stone massage is a type of massage therapy that involves placing heated stones on specific points of your body. It can help you relax, ease muscle tension, and improve blood flow. But how does it work and what are the benefits? In this blog post, we will explore the science behind hot stone massage and why it works.

What is hot stone massage?

Hot stone massage is a technique that originated from ancient cultures, including China, India and all the way down to Bali, Indonesia. It was used to treat various ailments, such as arthritis, insomnia, and stress. Today, hot stone massage is a popular and widely available form of massage therapy that can provide you with a soothing and therapeutic experience.

Hot stone massage involves using smooth, flat, and heated stones that are usually made of basalt, a type of volcanic rock that retains heat well. The stones are heated in water to a temperature of about 50 to 60 degrees Celsius (120 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit). The massage therapist then places the stones on specific points of your body, such as your back, neck, shoulders, chest, stomach, legs, and feet. The stones may also be held by the therapist and used to massage your muscles with gentle pressure.

The heat from the stones penetrates deep into your muscles and tissues, creating a warming and relaxing effect. The heat also dilates your blood vessels, improving your circulation and oxygen delivery to your cells. The heat also stimulates your nervous system, reducing pain signals and releasing endorphins, which are natural painkillers and mood enhancers.

What are the benefits of hot stone massage?

Hot stone massage has many benefits for your physical and mental health. Some of the benefits are:

  • It reduces stress and anxiety by calming your mind and body.
  • It relieves muscle tension and pain by loosening tight knots and improving flexibility.
  • It improves your skin condition by opening your pores and removing toxins.
  • It boosts your immune system by increasing your white blood cell count and fighting infections.
  • It promotes better sleep quality by inducing a state of deep relaxation.
How to prepare for a hot stone massage session?

If you want to experience a hot stone massage session, here are some tips on how to prepare for it:

  • Make sure you are hydrated before and after the session. Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins and prevent dehydration.
  • Avoid eating a heavy meal before the session. Eat something light and healthy at least two hours before the session.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that you can easily remove or adjust. You will be asked to undress to your level of comfort and lie on a massage table covered with a towel or sheet.
  • Communicate with your massage therapist about any medical conditions, allergies, injuries, or preferences that you have. Let them know if you feel any discomfort or pain during the session.
  • Relax and enjoy the session. Breathe deeply and focus on the sensations in your body. Let go of any thoughts or worries that might distract you.

The care, knowledge and skills that the therapists possess are amazing. I have been consistently going there whenever I can over the past few years and they always apply the session accordingly, the right pressure, areas in need and techniques. A great place for a regular gym enthusiast for muscle recovery or when you just need a little self care.

Fantastic place. Highly recommend. My therapist had excellent technique and I found it incredibly relaxing. The face massage was great but their reflexology was by far the best I’ve had in Sydney! Lovely & friendly staff.
